During the bidding process for the 1976 Olympics, Moscow was seen as a favourite and nearly won the rights to host, earning 28 votes to Montréal's 25 in the first round. In the second round, thanks to the support of many smaller and more politically neutral countries, Montréal earned 41 votes while Moscow maintained 28. Moscow would go on to host the next edition of the Olympics in 1980, which proved to be somewhat controversial due to widespread boycotts by major nations.
