In August 1976, around 2,000 disabled athletes competed in the Olympiad for the Physically Disabled in Toronto, also called the Torontolympiad. The first sporting competition for the disabled was held during World War II at Stoke Mandeville, England, and these Stoke Mandeville Games would later evolve into the modern-day Paralympic Games. This stamp depicts an archer in a wheelchair as “the embodiment of skill, strength and confidence” on a green background “signifying growth and hope”.
